Step 1: Starting Point
Agadir: The Blue City of the Atlantic
The capital of Moroccan seaside tourism, Agadir is the ideal gateway to your road trip. Enjoy its long beach, explore the Souk El Had (one of the largest in Morocco), and climb to the Kasbah for a panoramic view of the bay. Pick up your SUV ou 4×4 Cazorel upon your arrival.
Step 2: Hidden Jewel
The Anti-Atlas Mountains: Tafraoute and its gorges
A fortified town renowned for its Berber silver jewelry. Fill up your tank here: it's the last major gas station before the Anti-Atlas Mountains. You can also pick up a Cazorel vehicle directly in Tiznit if you're joining the tour along the way.
In the heart of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, Tafraoute is a Berber village nestled in a cirque of pink granite boulders. At sunset, the monoliths take on a spectacular fiery hue. The painted rocks by Belgian artist Jean Verame add a unique surreal touch. The Aït Mansour gorges conceal an oasis of ancient palm trees, bisected by a wadi.
Steps 3 & 4: UNESCO World Heritage
The legendary Kasbahs
Taroudant is an imperial city surrounded by 7 km of ochre-colored earthen ramparts, often nicknamed "Little Marrakech." It is less touristy and more authentic. Its artisan souks, palaces, and gardens make it an ideal stop for lunch and a stroll before continuing on to Ouarzazate.
The ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fortified city, built of golden rammed earth, has served as a backdrop for Game of Thrones, Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and dozens of other films. Ford the wadi and climb to the tower for a breathtaking view of the valley.
Nicknamed "the gateway to the desert," Ouarzazate is the capital of African cinema. The Taourirt Kasbah, an early 20th-century earthen masterpiece, overlooks the city. Atlas Studios offers a glimpse into the sets of legendary films. This is where the Great South truly begins.
Steps 5 & 6: Natural Wonders
The breathtaking Gorges qui coupent le souffle
The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs follows the Dadès River through landscapes of red and ochre rock. In April, the Kelaat M'Gouna Valley is carpeted with Damask roses, from which essential oils are extracted. The gorges offer tight hairpin bends along sheer cliffs, making it one of the most spectacular roads in Morocco.
The Todra cliffs rise 300 meters high but are only 10 meters wide at their base. A stream of fresh water flows through this natural cathedral. A renowned spot for multi-pitch climbing in Morocco, the site is most impressive at midday, when the sun directly illuminates the canyon.
Step 7: The Ultimate Experience
The Sahara Desert
The Erg Chebbi dunes reach heights of 150 meters and stretch for 22 km. Sunrise from atop a dune, after a night in a nomadic camp under a starry sky free from light pollution, is one of the most breathtaking experiences Morocco has to offer. An overnight stay in a camp is essential.
Located 50 km from M'Hamid along a dirt track, Erg Chegaga is Morocco's great forgotten desert. Larger than Erg Chebbi but virtually untouched by tourism, it offers an absolutely pristine desert experience. The dunes stretch for 40 km in length and 5 km in width. A 4x4 vehicle and a local guide are essential.
